Many cities and states hold conventions where prospective authors can meet with agents who are seeking clients to sponsor for publication. Do research online and in local and national newspapers to find such conventions. Once you have found some, go to them.
*-*Market Yourself in an Eye-Catching Way*-*
Think about your style of writing and personality, as well as what is in your book. Draw off the success of other well-known personalities to help capture your own unique style. By using the names of already well-known products or personalities to relate to who you are, you are better able to capture the attention of agents.
*-*Don't Waste Time*-*
Agents, especially at conventions, are busy and talk to hundreds if not thousands of hopeful authors each day. It is unlikely that you will initially be able to sit down and talk to an agent and have them remember you. Have all the information they will need ready on a handy CD or pamphlet that you can distribute to many different agents.
*-*Be Prepared*-*
Operate as if you are 100% certain you will be picked up. Have a proposal written and ready in case you receive a call from an agent. Not being ready is the difference between a quick publication process and being passed-up all together. Publishers do not want to wait, and the more prepared you are, the faster the process is.
