The 3 Step Solution to Stop Food Pollution
"E?coli 0157:H7, the one that you?ve heard about in the news?related to undercooked hamburger and even contamination of spinach and vegetables?is pathogenic and causes disease in humans," says Nancy Haberstich, CEO and founder of Nanobugs Inc, and a registered nurse specializing in infection prevention. With all the recalls concerning contaminated food in the news, how can you be sure you are protecting your family and yourself from dangerous bacterium? By following these three easy steps, you can greatly diminish the threat consuming contaminated food. Step 1: Water Coming in contact with infected meat, animal waste, and contaminated surfaces can spread infectious bacteria like salmonella and E. Coli. Always wash your hands before handing any food item. Run off from animal waste can also contaminate certain vegetables, such as lettuce and spinach. Although most bagged vegetables claim to be washed, thoroughly wash all vegetables before cooking and avoid eating them raw. Step 2: Fire E. Coli. may enter meat during the grinding process or by contacting contaminated surfaces. Infectious agents, such as salmonella, can also enter food by handling with unwashed or contaminated hands. Always cook meat at temperatures above 160 degrees Fahrenheit. When eating at a restaurant, order meat to be thoroughly cooked. Avoid raw meat and eggs, and only drink milk that has been pasteurized. Step 3: Knowledge When an E. Coli or salmonella outbreak occurs, there will generally be a warning and recall of contaminated products. Be aware of all recalls and outbreak warnings. Although the above methods will diminish the threat of consuming contaminated food, a guaranteed method of infection prevention is simply not to eat food you know is contaminated. When a recall or warning is issued, check packaging labels to ensure your food is not contaminated, and safely dispose of any contaminated items. About The Author Dr. Proactive Randy Gilbert is founder of "InsideSuccessRadio.com" and enjoyed learning from Nancy Haberstich, founder of Nanobugs Inc, during an interview on "Inside Parenting Success" with Jodie Lynn. Armed and Ready for Cough, Cold and Flu Season! with Stefanie P. Ferreri, Pharm.D., CDE
It’s that time of year again. Your throat is scratchy, your nose is stuffed, and your head is pounding and you just can’t seem to get rid of it. You’re not alone. Americans get about a billion colds a year with children getting the most- six to eight a year. In the US alone, between 5 and 20 percent of the population is infected with influenza each year. About 36,000 people die and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized because of influenza complications. But with the right treatment, you don’t have to be sidelined this winter. “When you’re starting to feel under the weather, it’s often hard to differentiate between the cold, the flu, and allergies,” says Dr. Stefanie Ferreri, director of Community Pharmacy Residency Program at the University of North Carolina. “So it’s really important to talk with your doctor or pharmacist before these symptoms get any worse and you land yourself in the hospital.” Dr. Ferreri offers advice on how to fight off sickness, even with an increased number of cold and flu bugs floating around, as well as tips on what to do if you fall victim to them. For her tips on how to beat the bugs this winter, go to www.moreaboutthat.info, click on our Cough & Cold Season segment and then download our podcast to see the segment online. If you are a news station and have access to Pathfire, this story is also available on Pathfire DMG. Click on the binoculars, select advanced search tab, highlight DWJ archive, and use keywords: Cough & Cold Season.
